The final weeks of the 2020 2021 La Liga season will be filled with lots of suspense after last weekend’s results shuffled the standings at the top of the table.
The weekend started with the El Clasico on Saturday night as Barcelona faced Real Madrid at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium. It ended with the Zinedine Zidane’s side making most of the chance to close the gap on their City rivals, Atletico Madrid, who sits at the top of the table.
Striker Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid the lead in the 13th minute, while Toni Kroos doubled the lead in the 28th minute.
Oscar Mingueza managed to get one back for Barcelona on the hour mark, but the Blaugrana couldn’t get the much-needed goal to get a point away from home, and the result meant that Real Madrid beats Barca three times consecutively for the first time in over 30 years.
It is also the first time since the 2009 season that Real Madrid is winning both legs of the El Clasico in a season.
The win puts Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid on the same number of points before Atletico Madrid faced Real Betis on Sunday evening.
However, Diego Simeone’s men failed to take full advantage by extending the lead to three points at the top of the table as they drew 1-1 with Real Betis on Sunday evening.
Yannick Carrasco gave Atletico Madrid the lead in the fifth minute before Cristian Tello equalised for the home side 15 minutes later.
Unfortunately, neither side could get the winner as the game ended 1-1 and leaves Atletico Madrid at the summit of the table with just a single point ahead of Real Madrid in second place.
Irrespective of the results, Atletico Madrid lead the table with 67 points from 30 games while Real Madrid are second with 66 points while Barcelona are in the third position with 65 points.
