Diego Simeone has praised the influence of the home support at the Wanda Metropolitano as Atletico Madrid snatched a dramatic 3-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Saturday.

Atleti twice fell behind during the match, but Rodrigo levelled things up at 2-2 with 10 minutes remaining before captain Diego Godin, who was struggling with a thigh injury for much of the second half, headed home a stoppage-time winner.

Simeone was understandably delighted with the character his side showed to snatch all three points in such dramatic fashion, while he was also keen to highlight the role the home support played in driving the team to victory.

“I am so happy for the fans,” Simeone told reporters. “The atmosphere was extraordinary.

“We had played a very good game against Borussia Dortmund [on Tuesday], who have beaten Bayern Munich and are top of the Bundesliga.

“But working hard and never giving up, our effort and the atmosphere stand out.”

Atleti have won seven and drawn one of their eight matches on home soil across all competitions this season and they have only lost one competitive match at the Wanda Metropolitano since January.

Saturday’s victory has also kept Los Rojiblancos very much in the La Liga title race and they can further underline their title credentials when they play host to Barcelona after the international break.

Atleti are priced at 3.20 to win that particular heavyweight tussle, while Barca are available at 2.30 and the draw is on offer at 3.40.
