Liverpool are close to completing a deal to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, with Pepe Reina tipped to return to Spain.

Belgian international Mignolet enjoyed an outstanding season at the Stadium of Light last term, playing a key role in helping the Black Cats survive in the top flight.

The 24-year-old though is about to enter the final year of his contract at Sunderland and, having shown a reluctance to sign an extension, has been strongly linked with a summer exit.

With Spanish international Reina understood to be on Barcelona’s list of summer transfer targets, Brendan Rodgers is believed to be eyeing a potential replacement.

Sunderland value Mignolet, who cost just £2million from Belgian club St Truiden in 2010, at £10million and have already snubbed an £8million offer from Liverpool.

However, it is now being suggested that the two clubs are close to reaching an agreement on a fee somewhere between the two figures.

Mignolet is expected to discuss personal terms soon with the Merseysiders and that is likely to pave the way for Reina to seal a return to his homeland.
