Juventus have confirmed that defender Giorgio Chiellini will miss the Champions League final against Barcelona on Saturday.

The 30-year-old pulled out of training on Wednesday after complaining of a calf problem and underwent tests on Thursday to identify the extent of the injury.

The Old Lady have now confirmed that the problem is severe enough to keep the experienced central defender out of the clash with Barca in Berlin.

A statement said: “Giorgio Chiellini was subjected to tests following calf discomfort in yesterday’s session. The tests showed a first-degree lesion of the soleus muscle in his left leg, so the defender will not be available for the match against Barcelona.”

The news is a blow to Massimiliano Allegri’s side, who are already the underdogs going into the match at the Olympiastadion.

The Serie A champions are 3.00 to win their first European title since 1996, whilst the Catalan giants are available at 1.36 to secure their fifth European crown.

There has been some positive news on the injury front for the Turin-based club with defender Andrea Barzagli completing another training session on Thursday following a thigh injury.

The 34-year-old now appears to be in line to replace Chiellini in the starting line-up for Saturday’s game.

The Old Lady will have their work cut out to keep Luis Enrique’s wealth of attacking talent at bay in the German capital, with the Blaugrana’s front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar having scored a combined total of 118 goals in all competitions so far this season.
