Jon Flanagan admits the chance to get his career back on track at Burnley is one that he is eager to accept.

The Liverpool defender agreed a season-long loan deal and joined Burnley on Friday as he seeks to put recent injuries behind him.

The chance to play regular first-team football in the Premier League was one that the 23-year-old full back simply could not turn down after injuries curtailed his ascent through the ranks at Anfield.

Flanagan made his Reds debut at 18 and by the end of the 2013-14 campaign his eye-catching performances saw him named as a standby for England’s World Cup squad for Brazil, while he earned a first international cap in a friendly against Ecuador.

A knee injury set him back the following season however and, while Liverpool gave him a renewed contract in May 2015, he has elected to move to Turf Moor in a bid to get the regular football he needs.

The new signing cannot wait to get started in a Burnley shirt. “I got the call off my agent and I am delighted it’s all done and I can get started,” he told the Clarets website.

“This is a massive club with passionate fans I can’t wait to get started.

I have been at Liverpool since I was 10, so I’ve been there a long time, but I think it’s time for me to get regular football and this was a great option for me.”

Having been sidelined for a prolonged spell, Flanagan is realistic when it comes to what is required at this point in his developing career.

“I have been out a long time and I need to get back to that level, which means getting a consistent run of games. I think this is the best opportunity to do that,” he added.

Burnley are 2.60 to win their opening Premier League game against Swansea City at Turf Moor while Sean Dyche’s side are 1.86 to be relegated this season.
