Everton defender John Stones believes team-mate Tom Cleverley deserves a recall to Roy Hodgson’s England squad.

The 26-year-old, who won the last of his 13 international caps in 2013, has been in fine form since joining the Toffees from Manchester United during the summer.

The midfielder has featured in nine league games for Roberto Martinez’s side so far this campaign and scored a dramatic injury-time winner in the Boxing Day triumph over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Cleverley’s renaissance has not gone unnoticed by Stones, who believes he deserves another chance with the Three Lions.

He said: “I know as players you’re biased to your own team-mates, but I think it’s only right that I speak on behalf of a lot of the lads in our dressing room when I say Tom should be in the England squad – on current form at least.”

Stones is himself a regular in Hodgson’s squad and he concedes that it will be tough for Cleverley to force his way back into the international set-up following a two-year absence.

Stones added: “He’s playing terrifically well. Sometimes players don’t get too many chances to get back into the squad, but I’m sure he would be delighted to.”

Cleverley will be looking to impress once again in Everton’s next match when they take on Stoke at Goodison Park on Monday.

The Toffees are favourites to win the Premier League clash at 1.91, whilst the Potters are 4.20 and the draw is 3.50.
