Defender Jesus Gamez says Atletico Madrid are confident of overturning a 1-0 deficit against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League this evening.

Diego Simeone’s men have not been in the greatest form recently and will certainly need to step up their game if they are to make the quarter-finals of the competition.

Their league form has been patchy and after drawing their last three games, the latest a goalless result with Espanyol at the weekend, they have slipped to fourth in the table.

Atleti remain nine points behind leaders Barcelona and their chances of defending their title look slim to say the least.

Confidence cannot be high heading into tonight’s game, but Gamez seems to think differently and believes they can get the job done against the Germans.

“We don’t think about anything else (other) than turning around the tie on Tuesday,” Gamez told Spanish sports newspaper Marca.

“We know it’s going to be difficult but our enthusiasm is big. We suffered in Leverkusen but this is a beautiful challenge.

“This is a great test in front of our home fans and we will all pull together to achieve it.”

Atletico are also missing key players and will have to overcome the absence of defender Diego Godin and midfielder Tiago, who are suspended, while defender Siqueira and midfielder Saul are both out injured.

Atletico are 1.81 to win the game, with Bayer 4.63 to get the win. A draw, which is priced at 3.55, would also see the Germans go through to the next round.
