James Chester is hoping victory against his old club Manchester United on Sunday will be enough to keep Hull City in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old left Old Trafford in 2011 and has since celebrated promotion out of the Championship and reaching the FA Cup final, as well as a Wales call-up, but now thoughts turn to a dramatic last-day scenario in the Premier League on Sunday.

Third-from-bottom Hull must beat Louis van Gaal’s men to have any hope of staying in the top tier of English football and hope Newcastle United slip up against West Ham.

“We would love it to end like a couple of years ago and everyone celebrating on the final day,” Chester told the Hull Daily Mail.

Warrington-born Chester never played in the Premier League for United and left four years ago for a fee of £300,000.

The visit of his and manager Steve Bruce’s old club has taken on extra significance for the pair and Chester says to achieve survival against his former employers would complete the story.

“That would be wonderful, and to do it against the club where I grew up would be unbelievable,” he added.

“It would make it extra special. Football throws up scenarios like this from time to time and, hopefully, it can be a special story.”

The former champions cannot be caught in the coveted fourth spot in the race to secure Champions League football for next season but Chester believes Van Gaal’s men are not untouchable.

He added: “I’ve been at United and it is a professional club. Just look at the trophies they have won over the past 25 years.

“That comes from the attitude of the players. But their away form isn’t as great as it could be, and certainly not as good as in recent years.

“If we can perform to the best of our ability – like we did against Palace, Liverpool and for 55 minutes at Spurs – then we have to be optimistic we can do it.”

Hull City are currently priced 3.20 in the match betting and the draw outcome is quoted 3.50. Manchester United are available to back in the 90 minutes market at 2.15.
