Everton boss Ronald Koeman says only good performances will see Ross Barkley force his way back into the England set-up.
The midfield playmaker was a member of England’s Euro 2016 squad under Roy Hodgson but was not handed any game time in France.
The 22-year-old’s international woes have since continued into Sam Allardyce’s tenure as the new Three Lions boss overlooked altogether him for his first match in charge against Slovakia.
Koeman is convinced Barkley can establish himself as an England star in the years ahead. The Dutchman has now told the Everton attacker that he must take full responsibility and make it impossible for Allardyce to leave him out again.
He told the Liverpool Echo: “I don’t like that (when a player blames others). First, you have to look at yourself.
“Every manager will select the best players and the best team. And if you show, then… you will be selected.
“Maybe Ross didn’t play his best match against Stoke when Sam Allardyce was in the stadium. But also what Sam mentioned is that Ross is on his list, so that’s clear.
“You can’t point your finger at somebody else. You have to ask yourself what you can do better, what you need to improve to be selected.
That’s how I think about football.” He added: “I spoke to Ross before the international break and I spoke to him after it.
All the players get that attention. “He’s still a young player, he was disappointed not to be selected.”
Everton travel to Sunderland on Monday and they are 2.15 to pick up all three points. England are 19.00 to win the World Cup 2018 outright and European champions Portugal can be backed at 26.00.
