Everton boss Roberto Martinez has backed Romelu Lukaku to return to his best form in the second half of this season.

The 21-year-old Belgium international enjoyed a brilliant 2013/14 campaign on loan at Goodison Park from Chelsea, finding the net 15 times in 31 Premier League appearances.

However, he has been less impressive this term following his £28million transfer in the summer and has only scored four goals so far.

Martinez is convinced the Everton fans will see a revitalised Lukaku soon though, saying: “I think Rom is going to hit his best levels in January. Then I think he’s capable of maintaining it until the end of May.

“I’m happy with his attitude and the way he works. He knows the responsibility he has for us and brings a lot of desire.”

Despite Lukaku’s mixed start to the campaign, Martinez has been pleased with the way the Belgian has worked with Samuel Eto’o and Steven Naismith and also thinks the team will benefit from the imminent return from injury of Kevin Mirallas.

The former Wigan Athletic and Swansea City manager is also happy to have Ross Barkley back from injury and thinks the 20-year-old can be an England great.

Martinez said of Barkley, who has already represented his country nine times: “There is no doubt in my mind that he will be the best player England has ever had.”

Everton face West Ham this weekend and are 1.75 to win the Goodison Park clash while the Hammers are available at 3.90 to triumph.
