Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has criticised the performance of his players during Thursday night’s 2-1 Europa League defeat to Fenerbahce.

The Red Devils went into the match having beaten the Turkish giants 4-1 at Old Trafford two weeks ago, but they failed to live up to those standards at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, with goals from Moussa Sow and Jeremain Lens putting Fenerbahce in control.

Wayne Rooney did score a late consolation for United, equalling the club’s European goal scoring record in the process, but it was not enough to salvage anything from the match, and after the game Mourinho was critical of his team’s overall performance.

“It was like they were playing a Champions League final and we were playing a summer friendly,” he told reporters.

The Portuguese coach has now seen his side win just two of their last seven matches in all competitions, and he admits his players did not heed the warnings that he gave them before Thursday’s match. “I passed on all my experience.

Play against them in our home is easy – you come to Turkey and it’s completely different,” he added. “But we started the game sleeping.

They started at 100mph, we started really slow.” The Red Devils will be hoping to return to winning ways when they travel to the Liberty Stadium to take on Swansea in the Premier League on Saturday.

Mourinho’s men are available at 1.73 to secure all three points in South Wales, while the Swans are priced at 5.00 and the draw is on offer at 3.80.
