Aaron Ramsey has withdrawn from the Wales squad for the European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan and the upcoming friendly clash with Belarus.

Head coach Ryan Giggs has been dealt the blow with the news the Juventus midfielder won’t be involved in the double-header. The Football Association of Wales announced the news on Tuesday, though no official reason was given for Ramsey’s withdrawal. Ramsey was not in the Juventus squad for their Serie A opener against Parma over the weekend.

The former Arsenal man was ruled out at the end of last term, missing the Europa League final defeat to Chelsea in Baku, as his Gunners career ended after a decade in north London. He has made only one appearance off the bench since his move to Turin, in a friendly against Triestina when he played 20 minutes.

Uncapped Manchester United teenager Dylan Levitt has been called by Giggs from the U21 side to replace Ramsey in the squad for the games against Azerbaijan and Belarus. Wales are fourth in Group E after away defeats against Croatia and Hungary in June, leaving them desperate for a win when they face Azerbaijan at the Cardiff City Stadium on 6th September in their next Euro 2020 qualifier.

Ramsey has scored 14 goals in 58 Wales appearances but has yet to make an appearance in the current campaign. Giggs has talked of his excitement at having Ramsey and Gareth Bale – his two marquee players – involved in a squad together for the first time in the qualifying campaign.
