Versatile defender Cuco Martina has completed his move to Southampton from Dutch club FC Twente on a two-year-deal.

The Curacao international primarily plays at right-back and he is expected to rival fellow new signing Cedric Soares for a place in the starting line-up following Nathaniel Clyne’s departure to Liverpool.

The 25-year-old has spent his entire career in Dutch football prior to his move to St Mary’s and during his time in the Eredivisie he played under Saints assistant boss Erwin Koeman at RKC Waalwijk.

The full-back can also play in the centre of the defence and the south coast club’s Executive Director of Football Les Reed believes he will add experience and competition for places across the back-line.

He said: “Cuco is a versatile and experienced defender who will add strength and depth to our squad ahead of the coming season. “He is another hungry player who is excited about coming to our club, and will provide healthy competition for places in our defence.”

Martina himself is delighted to have completed his move to the Premier League and he is looking forward to helping Ronald Koeman’s side maintain their high standards from last season.

He revealed: “I’m very happy to be here at a big club like Southampton. I’ve followed Southampton now for two years and I see they are now a big club. It was a dream for me to play in the Premier League.”

Southampton finished seventh in the league during the last campaign and they travel to St James’ Park on the opening day of the upcoming season where they will take on Newcastle.

The Saints are slight favourites 2.38 to secure victory in the north east, with the hosts on offer at 3.00. The draw is available at 3.10.
