Lazio progressed to the last eight of the Coppa Italia after a 1-0 win against Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday night.

The hosts got the needed win courtesy of Mateo Guendouzi’s first goal in the team’s jersey. As this proved enough to defeat Genoa, they will either play against Roma or Cremoneae in the Coppa Italia quarter-final. The last Rome derby ended goalless.

Lazio needed just five minutes to break through. Luca Pellegrini won back possession, burst down the left, and pulled back to the edge of the box, where Guendouzi, who joined Lazio from Olympique Marseille, finished the ball into the far bottom corner.

The Biancocelesti will the. Be looking forward to the next round after regaining their form, starting with a 2-0 win against Celtic in the UEFA Champions League.

Genoa responded with attacks as Mateo Retegui robbed Mario Gila but fired the shot straight at Ivan Provedel. He then fired over from close range following a Patric error.

Lazio had to make their first substitution after Gustav Isaksen limped off with a suspected muscular issue after 26 minutes. He was replaced by Felipe Anderson.

Guendouzi released a well-placed pass to Pedro at the back post, but the veteran was unable to make the most of it, prodding it into the arms of Nicola Leali.

Genoa continued their search for an equaliser as Gila flung himself in the way of Retegui to get a crucial block on the finish from six yards.

Pellegrini released a cross for Felipe Anderson, but he turned inches wide from 12 yards, and then Ciro Immobile stung Leali’s gloves after twisting and turning past a defender.

Immobile released a good pass to Toma Basic, who was clear on goal through the center, only for the midfielder to prod it into the arms of the goalkeeper from 12 yards.

Genoa continued their search for an equaliser, but Ruslan Malinovskyi blasted over from a distance as Lazio held on for the victory.
