Manchester City have been boosted by the news David Silva looks set to return from injury just in time for the hectic Christmas period.

The influential Spanish ace has been struggling with a calf injury that forced him to miss the last five games in all competitions but boss Manuel Pellegrini says he is now closing in on a return.

This weekend’s Premier League clash against Southampton will come a bit too soon but Pellegrini hopes to have him back next week.

Tuesday’s Champions League away clash with Bayern Munich could be a possibility.

City have already qualified for the knockout stage so, with the pressure off, it could be the ideal game for him to make his return.

Pellegrini will check on his fitness over the next few days before making a decision but, speaking ahead of the Saints clash, he sounded hopeful.

“Maybe on Monday, he will be ready,” Pellegrini said. “We’ll see the way he works tomorrow and on Sunday, and I will then decide next week (about whether he might be involved against Bayern).”

The Saturday after the Bayern clash, City take on league leaders Arsenal, who they currently trail by six points, and Pellegrini will want Silva fit and available for the match.
