Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas believes his former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi is more than happy with life at the Nou Camp and will not leave the Catalan outfit in the January transfer window.

Speculation has increased over recent weeks regarding Messi’s future with the La Liga giants, with some reports suggesting the Argentina international is ready to leave the club after a falling out with under-pressure manager Luis Enrique.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with the 27-year-old superstar, with Fabregas being connected with trying to help the Blues lure Messi to Stamford Bridge in the near future.

However the Spain international has fiercely denied these claims and believes the speculation surrounding Messi’s happiness with the Blaugrana is way off the mark.

He told Spanish radio programme Al Primer Toque on Onda Cero: “I’m upset that they say that I could be mediating for Messi to come to Chelsea. How can I be talking about contracts… I’m only a footballer.

“He (Messi) will do what makes him happiest. Personally, as his friend, colleague and footballer, if you gave me the chance to play with him again, I would welcome it.

“Messi is happy at Barca and they are happy with him.”

Messi looked more than settled in Barcelona’s last outing as they romped to a 5-0 victory over Elche in the Copa del Rey on Thursday night.

The South American scored from the penalty spot and blew kisses to the crowd in the comfortable cup win at the Nou Camp.
