Chelsea boss Antonio Conte says he will look to use David Luiz in his “right position” of centre-back.

The Brazilian’s return to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day was one of the biggest surprises to come from the summer window, having originally left the Blues for Paris Saint-Germain in 2014.

Conte is a manager known for defensive pragmatism and has shown throughout his coaching career that he favours stability and discipline over style when it comes to his rearguard.

Luiz’s first spell at the club was a mixture of moments of genius and defensive calamity, and his inconsistency was one of the reasons for the raised eyebrows that greeted his return.

This player himself has said he would be happy to play in central midfield if required but the boss has now confirmed he will be used in the heart of the defence, prompting suggestions of a switch to a back three.

Conte believes the former Benfica man plays his best football as a centre-back and has confirmed that’s where he will mainly be used during their time together in London.

“I think David Luiz is a centre-back, he’s played a lot of games in that position,” Conte told the club’s official website.

“I know sometimes he’s played as a central midfielder, but in my mind the idea is to utilise him in the right position which, for me, is centre-back.

“He’s played with Chelsea previously and he will bring a good personality.”

Luiz could make his second debut for Chelsea on Sunday when they travel to Swansea, a game they are 1.67 to win, with the draw 3.80 and the Swans 5.25.
