Leicester City look set to bolster their defence this week as Jonny Evans prepares to undergo a medical at the club’s training ground on Thursday.

The Northern Ireland international has one year left on his current deal at West Bromwich Albion but the Foxes have taken advantage of his relegation release clause.

Evans is free to leave for as little as £3.5million this summer and Leicester appear to have won the race for his signature.

The former Manchester United man was wanted by Arsenal and Manchester City last summer but he could now line up alongside Harry Maguire or Wes Morgan next season.

He will be hoping to help the push on next year after Claude Puel’s men failed to qualify for the Europa League after finishing ninth in the Premier League table.

Evans looks set to become Leicester’s second defensive signing of the window, with Ricardo Periera already through the door after completing his £22million mover last month.

While the Evans deal appears done and dusted, the club have also opened talks to try and sign winger Xherdan Shaqiri from recently-relegated Stoke City.

Reports in England suggest Leicester are one of the front runners to sign the Switzerland international.

The former Bayern Munich star is currently away with his national team at the World Cup in Russia but Leicester are hoping to get the deal done before the start of the tournament on June 14.

Like Evans, Shaqiri’s contract does include a relegation release clause but Leicester face competition from Liverpool and Everton this summer.
