Celtic defensive coach John Kennedy is hoping that Kieran Tierney and Leigh Griffiths can come through late fitness tests to earn their place in the squad for Saturday’s huge meeting with Rangers.

The defending champions are currently top of the Premiership in Scotland after winning all three of their fixtures as they prepare to host Old Firm rivals Rangers for the first time since their return to the top flight.

Celtic, who are priced at 1.15 to win the Premiership this season, currently have injury concerns over Griffiths and Tierney after they both withdrew from the Scotland squad with knocks this week.

Kennedy is hoping the duo will be able to overcome those issues in the next few days, however, and force their way into contention as the fixtures start coming thick and fast.

“Kieran Tierney and Leigh Griffiths are pretty positive. As the week progresses we’ll see how they are,” Kennedy said. “Treatment and rehab are going well.

We’re pretty confident but don’t want to commit.” The Scottish outfit have claimed victory in all five of their home games so far this term, netting 19 times, and look to be much improved under new boss Brendan Rodgers, who took over in the summer following Ronny Deila’s departure.

Kennedy feels Griffiths can play a key role as the Bhoys look to see off Rangers – especially if he maintains the kind of form he has already demonstrated this term after he took his tally to seven goals last time out against Aberdeen.

He added: “That’s what he gives you. He’s one of the best players on the pitch.

Leigh’s done very well and he’s a natural goal scorer. He’ll be doing all he can to be fit. “We’re confident and that’s the most important thing.

“It’s a team game and the boys that are here are doing a terrific job. It’s important we are disciplined, organised and focus on the game plan.”
