Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata believes his centre-back partnership with Virgil van Dijk is progressing well but admits the latter’s future is still undecided.

The Belgium international recently put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the Scottish champions after Manchester City accepted a £1.5million bid.

The 24-year-old struggled to cement a place in the first team at the Etihad Stadium and the switch to Celtic is a chance to resurrect his career.

The powerful defender made his debut for the Scottish champions in the 2-0 midweek friendly win over Den Bosch and there were positive signs from the steady performance.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the game was the partnership between Van Dijk and Boyata as the pair looked comfortable playing together.

There are still doubts over the future of the former Dutch Under-21 international with several top European sides reportedly weighing up a summer move.

Boyata is pleased with the start he has made to life at Celtic but the Belgian admits the future of Van Dijk is still uncertain.

“You never know who you are going to play with but Virgil is a really good player and we all know that,” he said. “I found it really good with him on Wednesday and hopefully that will continue to be the case.

“We will try bit after bit to show our qualities and that will come after we get our fitness back. But I don’t know what is going on with Virgil. I can’t say what is going to happen in the future.”

Celtic are big favourites to win the Scottish Premiership next season at 1.03 while Aberdeen are the next fancied at 21.00.
