Former Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello believes finding a way to cure Cristiano Ronaldo’s poor form is the best chance they have of emerging from their current slump.

The 31-year-old recently returned to the side following the knee injury that saw him limp off as Portugal beat hosts France in the final of Euro 2016.

However, despite scoring in wins over both Osasuna and former club Sporting Lisbon, he has looked alarmingly short of match fitness.

The Portuguese star’s lack of sharpness has made him appear a passenger at times during their recent run of four straight draws in all competitions.

Ronaldo’s issues even saw him replaced by boss Zinedine ZIdane for tactical reasons during the trip to Las Palmas, a decision that would previously have been unheard of.

Los Merengues’ poor run has seen them slip to second in the table, with local rivals Atletico overtaking them on goal difference, while Barcelona are a point adrift.

Real are currently 2.80 to top the standings, with Atleti 5.25 and holders Barca the 1.91 favourites.

Capello enjoyed two spells as coach at the Bernabeu, winning La Liga on both occasions only to fall out with the hierarchy over his pragmatic style of play.

The Italian has remained a keen observer of their fortunes though and believes getting Ronaldo back to full speed will be the key to overcoming their recent woes.

He told Spanish radio station Onda Cero: “The problem for Real Madrid now is Cristiano Ronaldo. Because he is not well physically and is their best player.”
