Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has stated that he will walk away from his position if the club’s hierarchy feel he is no longer capable of taking the Reds forward.
Rodgers suffered a nightmare end to the season on Sunday as Stoke City hammered his team 6-1 at the Britannia Stadium.
It was the first time in 52 years Liverpool had conceded six goals in a league game and in the aftermath Rodgers stated he will leave the club if the owner’s make it clear that is what they want.
“I’ve always said if the owners want me to go, then I go,” said Rodgers, who has won two of his last nine games.
“For everybody connected with Liverpool, we are all embarrassed by that result.”
On skipper Steven Gerrard’s final appearance for the club, Liverpool found themselves five goals adrift at the break after Stoke pierced through a weak rearguard.
Former Liverpool player Charlie Adam was amongst the goals while former Anfield striker Peter Crouch got his name on the scoresheet late in the game.
Rodgers said that there have been issues impacting Liverpool’s ability to make progress this season but he concedes that results like the one against Stoke do not help his position.
“A lot has happened this year which has made the job difficult,” added Rodgers.
“Last season, when things were working well, we had the support of everyone but performances like today do not help that and I fully understand that.”
Liverpool came in for some heavy criticism from the travelling support at the Britannia and having apologised to the fans Rodgers says he understands their anger.
