Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe insists his side are not just in the Premier League to make up the numbers and he is determined to have a competitive first season in the top flight.

The Cherries completed a meteoric rise up the divisions by winning the Championship title last season; just seven years after the club were close to going into liquidation.

The south-coast side began their first-ever campaign in the top flight with a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa and they will be looking to secure their first points in the Premier League when they travel to Anfield on Monday night to take on Liverpool.

Their 37-year-old boss is determined for his side to get off the mark as soon as possible and he insisted that they are not just looking to enjoy one season in the top flight.

He said: “The players need to be very strong in their thought processes – we’re not here to just see out a nice season, everyone pat us on the back and say unlucky. We’re here to compete and win games.”

The former Burnley boss is desperate for his team to make their mark in the division and he is hopeful of causing one or two upsets against the traditional heavyweights in the English game.

He continued: “We’re here to imprint us on the Premier League against some of the top sides – that’s what we want to do. To do that, we’re going to have to be absolutely convinced that what we’re doing is spot on.”

The Premier League new boys are outsiders to earn all three points against the Reds on Monday at 7.50, while Brendan Rodgers’ side are on offer at 1.44 and the draw is available at 4.50.
