Tottenham defender Ben Davies has withdrawn from the Wales squad to play Serbia on Saturday after picking up an ankle injury.
The left-back went down injured during Wednesday’s disappointing defeat to Bayer Leverkusen and he was unable to help his side avoid a 1-0 defeat to the German side at Wembley.
That knock forced him to miss Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday, with regular full-back Danny Rose back in the first team for the Premier League clash.
Davies, who has played in four league games so far for the north London giants has now been replaced by Bristol City’s Adam Matthews, who is currently on loan from Sunderland.
The news will come as a blow to Wales boss Chris Coleman ahead of the World Cup qualifier on Sunday. Coleman has used Davies as one of three centre-backs in the last year and the role suited him perfectly during the European Championships in the summer.
Wales have endured a frustrating start to their qualifying campaign and Saturday’s clash could put them under real pressure if they fail to get a result.
Davies had started all three of Wales’ Group D qualifiers which saw them beat Moldova 4-0, draw 2-2 with Austria and 1-1 against Georgia.
Serbia currently top the group, with Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland side sitting in second at the minute.
Wales’ home advantage makes them the 2.38 favourites to win this weekend, with the draw 3.20, while Serbia are priced at odds of 3.00 with Dafabet.
