Thomas Muller believes Bayern Munich’s 5-1 win over one of their nearest rivals in Schalke on Saturday means the Bundesliga title race is already over.

The Bavarians were once again at their irresistible best against Jens Keller’s men, inspired by an Arjen Robben hat-trick and further strikes from David Alaba and Mario Mandzukic to cruise to a 17th straight win in the league.

It means Bayern, who are the 1.45 favourites to win the German Cup, are now 20 points clear in the standings with 11 games left and it appears as if it is only a matter of time before they wrap up a second successive title.

Their form domestically means they can now concentrate on repeating last season’s treble success, with them still on course to defend the Champions League crown they claimed for the first time since 2001 last May, having defeat Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

Pep Guardiola’s men are once again the 2.85 favourites to conquer Europe and despite the presence of the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, no-one would be surprised if they made a fourth final in five years.

Despite the traditionally competitive nature of the Bundesliga, things have been extremely easy for them this season and although it is still only March, Muller believes his side can consider the job done.

“Realistically, the title race is already over,” the German international told Munich’s TZ newspaper. “I don’t think anybody really expects us to lose [enough of the remaining fixtures], particularly considering we have not lost any of the 23 beforehand.”
