Midfielder Xavi Hernandez insists he was wrong to write off Barcelona’s title chances two weeks ago as they prepare for a winner-takes-all match with Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
Barcelona looked to have thrown away the opportunity to claim a fifth title in six years when they were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Getafe at the Nou Camp.
However, the Catalans were handed a lifeline when both Real Madrid and Atletico slipped up and also failed to take the maximum points from their fixtures with Valencia and Levante respectively.
In what has been the tightest title race in years in Spain, the top three have failed to win their last seven combined games.
The defending champions now head into the final game of the season sitting two points adrift of league leaders Atletico with the two clubs set to meet at the Nou Camp.
Xavi said: “We thought that we didn’t have a chance and perhaps we threw the towel in too soon.
“We thought the league was lost, but these things happen in football and now we have everything in our favour to win. It is a very important title and we need to be united. It is a historic opportunity. It will be a spectacular finale.”
Gerardo Martino’s side will lose a number of key players in the summer.Victor Valdes and Carles Puyol have confirmed they will be looking for new clubs and Xavi believes a win would be the perfect way for them to sign off.
He continued: “We have a great generation of players. This is a unique match, a unique opportunity which may never come round again.
“It would be the icing on the cake for this generation to play in such a vital match.”
