Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has insisted that he wants to stay with the title-winning side for sporting reasons as a number of his team mates have been linked with moves away.

Atletico claimed their first league title since 1996 by claiming a 1-1 draw in a winner-takes-all meeting with Barcelona on the final day of the season earlier this month.

The Madrid-based side were on the verge of claiming a historic double as they led rivals Real Madrid 1-0 93 minutes into the Champions League final, only for Sergio Ramos to equalise and force extra time.

Los Blancos proved too strong in the additional 30 minutes, conceding a further three times to come away on the wrong side of a 4-1 result.

A number of the squad have inevitably attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs around Europe.

Diego Costa is expected to join Chelsea, while defenders Joao Miranda and Diego Godin have been linked with Manchester United and Bayern Munich respectively.

Gabi is also understood to be on the radar of a number of sides but insists that he has no intention to leave the club he has been with since his career began.

Gabi said: “My only plan is to stay at this club. It is normal that everyone wants our players, but they will have to ask the Atleti players if they really want to leave.

“One could improve things economically by going, but on the sporting side there are few teams that could better this.”
