Former England captain Alan Shearer believes Watford striker Troy Deeney should be handed an international call-up
after his impressive Premier League performances.

Deeney has been a regular fixture in Watford’s first team ever since joining the club in 2010, making 252 league appearances and scoring 94 goals.

The 28-year-old, who is skipper of the Hornets, formed a very successful partnership with Nigerian Odion Ighalo up front last season as the pair ensured the club stayed in the Premier League.

However, despite his good displays, the Birmingham-born star has yet to feature on the international stage and there have been few calls for this to change.

Competition in the forwards department is very high at the moment with Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge, Tottenham’s Harry Kane, who is currently injured, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, Southampton’s Charlie Austin and Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford all in the frame.

But, Shearer, who scored 30 times from 63 caps for the Three Lions, says Deeney should be handed a chance if the striking options become thin.

“He is an integral part to how Watford play. I like the way he leads that team and drags them around,” the ex-Newcastle United striker told Match of the Day.

“If there’s another injury then he should be given an opportunity.” Interim boss Gareth Southgate, who is in charge for the next four games following the sacking of Sam Allardyce, will name his squad for the upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.

England, who are 19.00 to win the World Cup in Russia outright, are 1.18 favourites to top qualifying Group F which includes Scotland, Slovenia, Lithuania, Malta and Slovakia.
