New Sunderland signing Adam Matthews is hopeful of bringing a winning mentality to the club following his move to the Stadium of Light.
The full-back joined Dick Advocaat’s side from Scottish champions Celtic for £2million last week after enjoying a trophy-laden four years north of the border.
The 23-year-old won four Scottish Premiership titles during his time with the Bhoys, as well as featuring in a number of European campaigns and he is now hopeful of achieving more success at the Black Cats.
The Wearsiders have endured a difficult few seasons in the Premier League, having narrowly avoided relegation in each of the last three campaigns, but the Welshman is hopeful his positivity can help the club steer clear of danger this season.
Matthews said: “I will be going into this team with the same mentality that I had at Celtic. The manager has spoken and said he is hoping to bring in a couple more players so hopefully we won’t be in the relegation fight against this season.”
The former Cardiff player believes that the current squad is capable of improving on their recent results.
He added: “With the players they have here, they shouldn’t be in a relegation fight anyway, but I spoke to Dick Advocaat and he said he is going to try and get more players in which can only strengthen the squad.”
The north-east club will begin the new campaign with a trip to the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester City.
The Black Cats are available at 4.00 to get the campaign off to a winning start, while the Foxes are the 1.95 favourites to take the three points. The draw is on offer at 3.25.
