England refused Kevin Pietersen permission to play for Surrey in Twenty20 finals day this weekend as he battles for fitness ahead of fifth Ashes Test at the Oval.

The injury is not thought to be serious and a scan on Wednesday confirmed he should be fit for next week.

He has, however, been ordered to rest by coach Andy Flower, much to the disappointment of Surrey.

England are going in search of history as they look to complete a first ever 4-0 home series victory against Australia and Flower says they will not take any risks on the star batsmen.

“He has played four Tests now and this is an opportunity to rest,” said Flower. “It would have been nice to make him available for Surrey but in this instance we can’t.”

England will name their squad for the final Test on Saturday and all being well Pietersen will be in it.

Meanwhile, Australia head to Northampton for a two-day match against the England Lions, with play beginning on Friday.
