Confirmed by a news release from Cavs last Friday stating guard Iman Shumpert 26 was arrested in Georgia last August 10 due to DUI, possession of marijuana and failure to maintain lane which was noticed by the County’s sheriff.

Shumpert caught in detention at around 11:37 PM last month when the sheriff noticed the Cavs player’s Audi A3 taillights weren’t working and swerving has been observed.

Although, the court hearing hasn’t set yet, there were already possible speculations about the said incident. As per NBA’s marijuana policy, Shumpert’s admission of weed smoking and possible conviction can result to League’s treatment policy. However for the second offense, he’d be charged $25,000 fine and might result to a five game suspension for the third offense.

According to the report, Shumpert was found alone in the vehicle and heading to the airport to pick up his father. The player’s eyes appeared as reddish as bloodshot and the interior of the car has the smell of marijuana. After being told to stop, Shumpert undergone series of field sobriety tests of which the player failed. Arresting officer also found out marijuana in the trunk of his rental car.

When asked by Corporal Brennan Kersey, Shumpert admitted that he smoked marijuana just before leaving the house. “He retrieved a brown bag of Backwoods Honey Bourbon cigars and small torn pieces of brown paper and handed it to me” he added.

After then, Shumpert was taken into custody but refused to take a blood test after the Corporal told him he would need to go to the local hospital. Under Georgia law, refusing to submit blood test could result to 1-year suspension of driver’s license.

Based from records, this is not the first time NBA players have been charged for DUI. Ty Lawson got suspended for 2 games after DUI arrest last season while Greg Monroe charged in Michigan for similar cases after visibly impaired and was suspended for two games.

Shumpert signed under Cavs contract for 3 years as starting shooting guard together with JR Smith and might miss the season’s commencement if found guilty.
