Wayne Rooney believes victory for Manchester United against Arsenal on Sunday will kick-start their title chase following an inconsistent start to the campaign.

The Red Devils go into the match eight points behind the current leaders, after a difficult few months where they have struggled to adapt to life under new boss David Moyes.

Things have looked slightly more positive for them in the last few weeks though, with wins against Fulham, Norwich and Stoke getting them back on track and they now seem to be finally moving the right direction under the Scot.

Arsenal have been the surprise package of the season, because after losing on the first day of the campaign they have won eight of their last nine league games and go into Sunday’s clash off the back of an impressive Champions League victory away at Borussia Dortmund.

A number of the Gunners players have spoken of their confidence ahead of the match and a victory at Old Trafford would certainly be a fitting end to a brilliant week.

Rooney knows just how important the clash is and the striker believes a win will put his side in a good position going into the busy winter months.

“I think at the minute there’s 28 games to go, anything can happen, one result can turn the league on its head,” he told Sky Sports News. “We’re still within touching distance and to get a victory on Sunday will put us in a great position I think.

“It is the perfect fixture for us. Arsenal are obviously doing really well but with our current form, it is a chance for us to get a bit closer in the table.”
