Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark insists his team cannot afford to get complacent when they take on Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.

The Magpies shot to the top of the Championship table earlier this season after going eight games unbeaten.

Rafa Benitez’s men then lost three straight games, with league defeats to Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest coming either side of an EFL Cup exit to Hull City.

Newcastle eventually got back to winning ways last weekend when they beat Birmingham City 4-0 and many are already expecting them to gain automatic promotion.

Brighton’s win on Tuesday night has pushed Benitez’s side back down to second but they can return to the top of the table if they beat Wigan.

The Latics sit 23rd in the Championship table and Clark admits that his team cannot afford to overlook their opponents in such an important game.

He told Sky Sports: “Every player wants to be in the best leagues in the world and obviously the Premier League is one of them. The fact that we’re winning games and the position that we’re in obviously helps.

Fans are enjoying watching us play and it gives us a massive boost. “It’s just an enjoyable place to be at the minute – at training and the ground.

All we have to do is keep it going. We can’t get complacent because we’ve done nothing yet.”

Wigan are 5.25 to grab all three points, with the draw priced at 3.60, while the Magpies are 1.70 favourites to win with Dafabet.
