Roger Federer will not be involved in the Olympic Games in Rio or the US Open after confirming he will miss the rest of the season with a knee problem.

The Swiss star initially sustained the injury following his semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open and underwent surgery in February.

The 17-time major champion returned to action and moved back up to number two in the world rankings during that time but was forced to withdraw from the French Open, ending a run of 65 consecutive Grand Slam appearances in the main draw.

Federer made another comeback and reached the last four at Wimbledon but lost in five sets to Milos Raonic.

The 34-year-old had been expected to compete in the Olympics in what would probably have been his final chance to claim a gold medal, the only major honour missing from his trophy cabinet, but he revealed on Facebook on Tuesday that his campaign is over.

However, the former world number one moved to dispel any notion he could decide to call time on his illustrious career and says he has chosen to miss the rest of the current season in order to prolong his time on the ATP Tour.

“I’m extremely disappointed to announce that I will not be able to represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Rio and that I will also miss the remainder of the season,” he wrote.

“Considering all options after consulting with my doctors and my team, I have made the very difficult decision to call an end to my 2016 season as I need more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year.

“The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover.”
