London Irish have called a press conference for Tuesday where they are expected to announce the capture of Australian star James O’Connor.

O’Connor has suffered a dramatic fall from grace since the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia in the summer and has been on the look-out for a short-term contract in Europe.

The Exiles are now expected to unveil the utility back on Tuesday after making the following statement: “A significant player signing will be announced at the conference.”

The 23-year-old can play can play at centre, wing, full-back or fly-half and the Exiles’ director of rugby Brian Smith says he will be a real coup for the club.

“He’s a world-class player, he’s a terrific kid. Any team in England or in France would be lucky to have him,” he said.

O’Connor has had his problems off the field and was recently escorted from Perth airport for drunken behaviour but he also has bags of talent and will be hoping to put in some eye-catching performances for the Exiles.

O’Connor was dropped from the Australian squad after the series defeat to the Lions, but will be hoping to play his way into the thoughts of new Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie while with London Irish.
