UFC 200: Miesha Tate to Defend Her First Title against Nunes

Fresh off from a thrilling and intense fight against Holly Holm, many UFC fans is expecting Miesha Tate to have a rematch with the former champion Rounda Rousey in the women’s bantamweight division, otherwise an immediate rematch with Holm. To the surprise, it’s not Rousey or Holm but another name in mind: Amanda Nunes.

This coming July 9, Tate will have her first title defense for UFC 200 at the newly opened T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Tate struggled in his two fights with here UFC 0-2 record and both losses are coming from Rounda Rousey. However then since he won 5 straight fights and on her way of becoming a champion, he signed another contract with UFC of which can be considered a contemplating retirement fight.

Her opponent Amanda Nunes holds a record of 12-4 in MMA and only 1 loss in the UFC (3rd Round TKO against Cat Zingano). She went back to the octagon as main card in the UFC 196 wherein she faced Valentina Shevchenko and won via unanimous decision. Reviewing her previous fights, 4 of Nunes winnings were by way of stoppage which includes an impression submission against Sara McMann in their fight last August 2015.

In an interview by MMAJunkie, Tate shares his thoughts about Amanda Nunes being the next best girl in line in the UFC Today. “They were like, Look you just beat Holly. You finished here. It was kind of Let’s open up the division and we’d like you to fight Amanda” Tate added. She also explains Holm-Tate didn’t warrant an immediate rematch; not even one of those crazy performances that got to have an immediate rematch.

On the other hand, Holm’s longtime manager, Lenny Fresquez commented on Tate’s decision about the supposed to be rematch against the former champion. Fresquez explains that Holly was offered to Tate but she chose Nunes – the weaker opponent. “She’s not as stand-up as Holly. She said she’d take on the best but she’s not willing to take on the best. Holly gave her the chance. We’re pretty disappointed she didn’t return the favor,” she added.

UFC 200 is headlined by the welterweight championship rematch between “The Notorious” Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, which was also the main event during the Holm-Tate fight in UFC 196. However, due to McGregor’s delayed of flight to Las Vegas, the fight was postponed and schedule for UFC 202.
