Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson is targeting a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, with the heptathlon starting on Friday.

The 23-year-old will be participating at her second Games this summer following her 15th-place finish in London four years ago.

The Liverpudlian watched on as fellow Brit Jessica Ennis-Hill claimed overall glory at the 2012 Games and she admits that she hopes to emulate her compatriot this summer.

“She (Ennis-Hill) has inspired me ever since London so that is what I want to do now – to win an Olympic gold,” Johnson-Thompson said.

“Hopefully, that’s what I can do now. I think everyone has to aim for gold but I’m not going to be disappointed if I just get a medal, it’s an Olympic medal.”

The heptathlon will be split across two days in Rio, concluding on Saturday, and Johnson-Thompson concedes that no matter what happens on day one, it will be a sleepless night heading into the final day’s action.

She added: “It’s not done after one day. It’s not feet up and kick back, it’s going to be a tough time no matter what.”

Johnson-Thompson is available at 3.00 to claim Olympic gold in Rio while Ennis-Hill is priced at 2.25 to successfully defend her title.
