WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell’s trainer, Dave Coldwell, has confirmed he will take on WBA ‘Super’ champion Rau’shee Warren in the near future before stepping up a weight division.

The Doncaster fighter won the WBA title back in 2014 and has since defended it on four occasions.

He was last in action in April when he stopped Fernando Vargas at the 02 Arena but now the 30-year-old is aiming high.

Former WBA super-bantamweight champion Carl Frampton has just vacated his belts and moved up but McDonnell still has plenty of big fights to choose from.

He is eager to win another world title at bantamweight before stepping up to super-bantamweight and Coldwell is adamant his star will be a dangerous weapon in a higher division.

He told Sky Sports: “The Warren fight is very close so fingers crossed. “We’re just sorting things out.

Hopefully that’s the fight that’s next, it’s the fight that Jamie wants.

Jamie wants to fight the best out there, he wants fights that will get him respect.

“This could be his final fight at bantamweight before he steps up to super-bantamweight, hopefully for a big fight against someone like Scott Quigg. “Jamie is, without doubt, our most underrated world champion.

We’ve got a great set of world champions in Britain but he’s the guy that people forget about.

“You’ll see the best of him when he steps up to super-bantamweight – the extra four pounds he’s not having to lose.”
