Promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that Kell Brook will undergo surgery on a broken eye socket on Monday in Sheffield following his defeat to Gennady Golovkin.

The Briton stepped up from welterweight to take on the middleweight king and held his own on a special night at the 02 Arena in London on Saturday night.

Brook was wobbled in the first round before digging deep to lead on the scorecards at the start of the fifth.

He showed tremendous accuracy and speed throughout the fight but a punch in the second round had broken his eye socket, eventually catching up with him.

With the win Golovkin retained his WBA ‘Super’, IBF and WBC middleweight crowns but Brook’s career was not damaged in defeat as he ponders his next move going forward.

The 30-year-old was taken to hospital after the fight though and Hearn admits he will now need surgery.

He tweeted: “Thanks for the messages, Special K Brook now left hospital – confirmed broken eye socket op on Monday in Sheffield.”

After the fight, Brook claimed he could have done more but conceded that the eye socket problem was his downfall in the end.

He told Sky Sports: “In the second round, he broke my eye socket but I was tricking him, I was frustrating him.

I was starting to settle into it but when you see three, four, five of them, it’s difficult.

“He’s a scary champion but I would fight him again. I’m trying to give back to the fans and I hope they enjoyed the fight while it lasted.”
