Dustin Johnson saw his one-shot lead evaporate on day three of the Tour Championship, but he remains level at the top of the leaderboard with Kevin Chappell.
The world number two, who is available at 2.05 to win the event, endured an up and down day at East Lake Golf Club, carding a round of 69 that included six birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey at the par four 17th.
The US Open champion is now on eight-under-par for the tournament and he was pleased with his overall performance on Saturday, although he conceded that he missed some good opportunities to maintain the outright lead.
“I thought I played pretty well, just a couple of loose drives on the back side,” Johnson said. “Other than that, I thought the round was pretty solid.
I missed a few good opportunities for birdie on 8, 9 and 2, but otherwise, I felt like I hit good putts. They just didn’t go in.”
Johnson, who is also chasing overall glory in the FedExCup, has been joined at the top of the standings by world number 34 Chappell, who was a model of consistency over his third round, closing with a two-under-par score of 68.
Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy and American Ryan Moore are two shots behind the leading duo on six-under, after both players produced impressive rounds of 66 on day three.
Hideki Matsuyama is also in contention heading into Sunday’s final round on -5, while former PGA Championship winner, Jason Dufner, is a shot further back.
