Danny Lee says he is ready to do battle with Jordan Spieth during Sunday’s final round of the John Deere Classic.
Lee claimed his maiden PGA Tour title at last week’s Greenbrier Classic and has continued his form in Illinois, with a couple of 68s and a career-best 62 on Saturday moving him to 15-under.
That total leaves him two shots behind the ever-impressive Spieth, who after opening with a disappointing level par 71 bounced back with rounds of 64 and 61 to put himself in pole position to successfully defend the title he won 12 months ago in a play-off.
Elsewhere, Shawn Stefani, Justin Thomas and Johnson Wagner are currently in a tie for third on 14-under, while one of the men Spieth beat last year, Zach Johnson, is a further stroke back.
Having already won both the Masters and the US Open in 2015, it is understandably the world number two who is the overriding favourite to take the title at TPC Deere Run.
However, having played alongside Spieth in the opening couple of rounds, Lee insists he will not be overawed by his task heading into Sunday.
“I haven’t won the tournament yet, but I’m close and I can feel it,” the Kiwi told the PGA Tour’s official website. “I’m just letting myself go and my confidence is high.
“I know there are going to be a lot of people watching tomorrow. Hopefully, some people will root for me and not Jordan, just to make it fair.”
As things stand, Spieth currently tops the betting on 1.50, with Lee trailing behind at 8.00, while Johnson and Thomas are both 11.00.
