Force India team principal Vijay Mallya is looking for big improvements during the course of the 2014 Formula 1 season.

The Silverstone-based team will have a driver pairing of the returning Nico Hulkenberg and McLaren outcast Sergio Perez for the upcoming campaign and the duo have now been told what is expected of them.

Force India are the first team to release pictures of their 2014 car – the VJM07 – and Mallya is expecting to compete after finishing in sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship in 2013.

He said: “We’ve got to aim higher than last year. It’s an ambitious goal, but I believe it’s a realistic one because we have to look forward and take the fight to the teams ahead of us.

“We have the key elements in place to continue moving forward.”

Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, Lotus and McLaren all fared better than Force India in 2013 so it will be interesting to see just where any improvements are made with Hulkenberg and Perez in the line-up.

Mallya added: “Nico has been with us before, so we understand him and know how quick he is. It’s great to have him back.

“As for Sergio, he’s an exceptionally talented driver who I have watched carefully over the last three years. He’s clearly got incredible speed and at just 23 has great potential. As a combination, we thought they would make a strong pairing.”

The 2014 Formula 1 season starts in Australia on March 16 and Red Bull’s four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel is 2.07 to make it five world titles in a row.
