McLaren driver Jenson Button believes team principal Martin Whitmarsh is the right man to help team get over a poor start to the season.

McLaren driver Jenson Button believes that team principal Martin Whitmarsh is the right man to help the team get over a poor start to the season, despite the criticism he has received.

Button and his team-mate, Sergio Perez, are yet to finish a race in a better position than fifth this campaign, leading to a lot of unwanted attention from both the media and fans who are unhappy.

The Brackley-based team head into their home race at Silverstone next with a lot of pressure to try and pick up a positive result in the MP4-28.

The Brit revealed that the biggest disappointment so far this term was last time out in Montreal when both drivers failed to finish in the points – the first time this has happened in 65 events.

Sporting director Sam Michael described the race in Canada as ‘brutal’ but stands alongside Button on the opinion that Whitmarsh is the correct man to help the team recovery from the slump.

Button said: “As far as I know everyone’s united.

“Martin’s is a really good leader and he’s a proper human being as well. He’s a guy that you can trust, you can believe in and I feel that everyone at the factory, all the people I speak to when I’m there, feel exactly the same.

“It’s so difficult for a team principal when a team that normally wins grands prix suddenly isn’t winning grands prix, but I think he is the best leader to bring us through this difficult time.”
