Sunderland have completed the signing of experienced defender Younes Kaboul from Tottenham for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old central defender is Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat’s fourth signing of the summer, following the addition of Sebastian Coates, Adam Matthews and Jeremain Lens.

Advocaat is attempting to rebuild the squad he inherited from Gus Poyet after the experienced Dutch boss steered Sunderland clear of relegation in the final weeks of last season.

Kaboul had fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane under Mauricio Pochettino and he is delighted to make the move to the north east.

“I’m delighted to be a Sunderland player and it’s an honour to join this club. I can’t wait to start playing for the Sunderland supporters,” said the former French international.

Uruguayan defender Coates impressed on loan from Liverpool at the Stadium of Light last season and Advocaat is pleased to have an experienced player to potentially slot in alongside the 24-year-old.

Advocaat said: “He is a very experienced player, which is what we need. He has shown that in his time at Spurs and he will be a very good addition to our squad.”

Kaboul made 111 appearances for Tottenham during his second stint at White Hart Lane having spent 18 months at Portsmouth after originally joining the north London club from Auxerre in 2007.

Advocaat will be determined that Sunderland make a fast start this season after the club were forced to stave off relegation with late revivals in each of the last two seasons.

They open the new campaign with a trip to Leicester, a game Sunderland are 4.00 to win.

Sunderland are 2.50 to be Top North East Club in the Premier League next season.
