West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino looks set to be fit for the start of the new Premier League season, after a knee injury proved not to be as serious as was first feared.
The 21-year-old sustained a knee injury while on duty for the England Under-21s at the European Championships in the Czech Republic and has been forced to miss the whole of the tournament.
However, scans and tests on his right knee have not shown up any serious damage and the Baggies are hopeful that Berahino will be fit to feature when the new Premier League season gets underway in early August.
Albion performance director Dr Mark Gillett told the club’s official
website: “Saido has got a ligamentous tear of his knee which does not require surgery, but careful rehabilitation for up to four weeks.
“We are grateful to the England medical staff for putting Saido’s welfare first.”
Berahino has been linked with a possible move away from The Hawthorns this summer, having scored 20 goals in all competitions for the club last season.
However, his form dipped towards the end of the campaign, with his double in a 3-0 win at home to champions Chelsea the only goals he netted in 11 games.
Albion finished 13th in the Premier League last season, having picked up and moved well clear of the relegation dogfight following the arrival of Tony Pulis as their new head coach in January.
West Brom can be backed at 3.75 to be relegated next season, with Midlands rivals Aston Villa at 4.00.
