England captain Wayne Rooney believes Sam Allardyce is the perfect man to take charge of the national side following his appointment on Friday.

The FA had been on the hunt for a new manager since Roy Hodgson confirmed his resignation following England’s last-16 loss to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Former Hull boss Steve Bruce was understood to be a leading candidate to succeed Hodgson before Allardyce was officially given the job on Friday.

The 61-year-old will now be tasked with rebuilding confidence within the Three Lions’ set-up after disappointment earlier this summer.

Allardyce’s first game in charge will be a 2018 World Cup qualifier against Slovakia in Trnava on September 4.

England, who are priced at 1.36 to win Group F in qualifying, are also set to face Scotland, Slovenia, Lithuania and Malta as they look to secure a berth for the major tournament hosted by Russia.

Rooney, who insists he is ready to carry on with the national side, feels Allardyce is the right man and expects he will bring a new approach.

“Yeah, I think it’s a good appointment for England,” he told reporters.

“He will probably bring a different way of playing to England and hopefully it’s a good way and we can be successful under him.

“I only know him through teams he has managed. I have seen him a few times off the pitch, but it’s like everyone, I know him through the teams in the Premier League.

“Am I going to carry on? Of course. It was asked of me after the Euros, but yes, I’ll be there.”
