Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is confident his team can stay up this season in the Premier League after claiming they can do “great things”.
Watford, 1.73 to be relegated, will get their season underway with a trip to Goodison Park to take on Roberto Martinez’s Everton.
After achieving promotion last season after finishing second in the Championship, the Hornets hired Quique Sanchez Flores as their new manager.
A change of manager was not the ideal preparation ahead of pre-season but the club have added plenty of players as they try to prepare for the Premier League, seven years after being relegated.
Former Getafe coach Flores has signed a number of players already, while the likes of Lewis McGugan and Diego Fabbrini have left the club.
Giedrius Arlauskis, Valon Behrami, Steven Berghuis, Miguel Britos, Etienne Capoue, Jose Holebas, Jose Manuel Jurado, Marco Motta, Allan Nyom and Sebastian Prodl have all joined up in the last few weeks.
With the new additions and Flores in charge, Gomes insists the Hornets can surprise the rest of the Premier League by finishing in a good position.
He told Sky Sports News HQ: “He is trying to get the best from the players. He knows football, he is a very experienced manager and I believe we are going to do great things with him.
“With the squad we have, we have a great chance to finish high but we never know. The Premier League is difficult but we are confident we can finish in a good position.”
