Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has praised the spirit of his side and has called for the same level of passion to be kept up for the entire season.

Tottenham produced a sensational performance at White Hart Lane on Sunday to inflict the first league defeat on Manchester City this term and the first competitive loss for Pep Guardiola since he took charge of the Citizens this summer.

Aleksandar Kolarov, who made a mistake in the midweek Champions League 3-3 draw with Celtic, was again at fault as he diverted a crossed into the back of his own net, putting the visitors 1-0 down early on.

England international Dele Alli then doubled the lead when he finished off a neat move in the box and the hosts were able to see out a comfortable 2-0 victory.

It could have, and probably should have, been made 3-0 but Argentine Erik Lamela saw his second-half penalty saved well by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men remain undefeated from seven matches, winning five and drawing two, and they are now just one point behind City in second.

Action now heads into the international break and Lloris, who has been in great form in between the sticks, hopes the players can continue to show the same desire when they return to the domestic matches.

“As long as we keep the same mentality and spirit we can have ambition,” the Frenchman said. “We have a young team with a lot of talent. We need to make sure we are not changing our minds, just being the same.”

Tottenham, who are 9.00 to win the title, take on West Bromwich Albion, who are unbeaten in their last three league matches, on October 15 at the Hawthorns.

The hosts are the 4.75 outsiders to pick up all three points, a draw is priced at 3.60 while the visitors are the firm 1.73 favourites to make it five wins on the bounce.
