Ryan Mason believes his move to Hull City can help kick-start his career and get him back in contention for England honours.

The 25-year-old became Hull’s record signing on Tuesday in a deal believed to be worth £13m.

Leaving Tottenham Hotspur, Mason admitted that he was eager to get regular first-team opportunities and he said did not have any doubts about joining Hull.

The Tigers have been actively recruiting as they look to strengthen what is a threadbare squad for the Premier League season ahead.

Boss Mike Phelan steered Hull to two wins in their opening games before Saturday’s last-gasp defeat to Manchester United.

Mason was joined by Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall in signing on but he will have to wait until September 10 when Hull visit fellow promoted side Burnley to make his bow.

“I’m delighted to get the deal done and I can’t wait to get started,” he told Sky Sports.

“It’s a shame I’ve got to wait for two weeks.” Despite Hull operating from a small pool of players so far this season, Mason is upbeat on the state of the club he is joining.

“When I look at the squad, it’s a good bunch of characters, a good bunch of lads. It felt right – I had to go with my gut.

As soon as they became interested, Hull City was the club for me. It was a straightforward decision. I’m excited,” he added.

Hull are 3.25 to win their game at Turf Moor, hosts Burnley are 2.30 and the draw is 3.00.

Mason earned one senior England cap under Roy Hodgson and he hopes his move will help him push his way into Sam Allardyce’s thinking.

“I’m coming to my peak but my goal is to get in the Hull team and then anything can happen,” he said. “Of course, I’m an Englishman and I want to play for my country.”
