Everton manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Romelu Lukaku will remain at the club for at least one more season, and the striker could even sign a new contract at Goodison Park.

The Belgian international had been expected to leave the Toffees this summer after reportedly handing in a transfer request, but Koeman has now confirmed that the forward has reversed that decision, and he now intends to remain on Merseyside for at least another season.

Koeman said: “He spoke to me yesterday morning that he has made the decision himself to stay one more season at Everton, and that’s great news.”

The Dutch coach believes Lukaku could even sign a new contract on Merseyside, after the 23-year-old made his first appearance of the season during the club’s 2-1 victory over West Brom at The Hawthorns on Saturday. He added: “A new contract is possible.

I don’t doubt his qualities. He was out for 10 days with an injury but I’m not so stupid as to put him on the bench next week. That’s no question.”

Lukaku, who scored 18 goals in 37 league appearances for the Toffees last season, will now be hoping to earn his first start of the season in the club’s League Cup encounter with Yeovil at Goodison Park on Tuesday.

Everton have never won the League Cup, but they are available at 1.20 to secure a victory on Tuesday, while League Two Yeovil are on offer at 13.00 and the draw is priced at 6.50.
